Betschart and Hüberli back in EuroBeachVolley final

14.08.2021 - Vienna, Austria

Nina Betschart and Tanja Hüberli are back in a continental final after three years as the Swiss booked a place to meet Dutch Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam in the gold medal match of the A1 CEV EuroBeachVolley Vienna 2021 presented by Swatch on Saturday.

The Swiss emerged victorious in the second semifinal of the women’s tournament, topping German veterans Karla Borger and Julia Sude in a closely-contested match to secure a three-set (21-9, 22-24, 16-14) victory and advance to the gold medal match.

“It feels great to be back in the final”, Hüberli commented. “We had a hard time in the last two years as we entered the EuroBeachVolley seeded first but ended up losing really early. We were really determined to go as far as we could this time and we’re really thrilled to be able to play for the gold medal.”

The 28-year-old Hüberli and the 25-year-old Betschart will have a second chance to become European champions in just three years after they took silver in 2018, losing to Dutch Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink, a team they defeated in the quarterfinals in Vienna. They will also try to keep the trophy in Switzerland after compatriots Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré won the 2020 edition of the EuroBeachVolley.

This will be the first meeting between the Swiss and the Dutch, who advanced earlier with a 2-1 (21-15, 15-21, 15-11) victory over Olympic semifinalists Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka of Latvia.

“They’re really young, talented, positive and have a lot of energy,” Betschart said of their opponents. “All Dutch players are real fighters and I’m sure it’s going to be a big battle. We’re really looking forward to it.”

The bronze medal match between Germans and Latvians is set to start at 16.45 CEST at the Red Bull Beach Arena while Swiss and Dutch will meet for gold at 17.45 CEST.
