Beach Shorts

23.06.2021 - Vienna, Austria

Hello, beach volleyball fans, welcome back to our newest edition of Beach Shorts!

First of all, no, you’re not crazy, today is not Friday yet (unfortunately!). However, with one of the most important tournaments of the season, the European Continental Cup Final, which will qualify one team in each gender for the Tokyo Olympics, starting this Wednesday, we thought that putting Beach Shorts out earlier exceptionally this week would give you guys the best opportunity to follow it from the start.

It will be a busy weekend of beach volleyball in Europe, actually, with national tours taking place in two of the strong nations in the continent, Switzerland and Russia and we bring all the info you need about it too.

Enjoy this early edition of Beach Shorts and warm up for a few long days of beach volleyball.

Continental Cup Final in The Hague

One final Olympic berth in each gender will be in play for European nations between Wednesday and Saturday in the Hague, the Netherlands. Countries that already qualified two teams for the Olympics (and that means Germany and Switzerland among the women and Poland, Russia and Italy among the men) are out and players who already qualified via other methods cannot compete either. But there should be some elite beach volleyball played by the 16 countries in each gender which are in contention over the next few days and here you can find the complete schedule.

Swiss Tour in Locarno

Since the Swiss women will have no business at the Continental Cup Final, they will stay home and compete in the opening event of their national tour in Locarno from Thursday to Sunday. Reigning European champions Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré lead the entries and they will have competition from two top German teams in Laura Ludwig/Maggie Kozuch and Victoria Bieneck/Isabel Schneider. Quentin Métral and Yves Haussener are the top-seeded among the men since Adrian Heidrich/Mirco Gerson and Marco Krattiger/Florian Breer will be representing the country in The Hague.

Russian Tour in Moscow

The scenario will similar in Russia, where the national tour event in Moscow from Thursday to Sunday will not feature Ksenia Dabizha/Daria Rudykh and Maria Voronina/Mariia Bocharova, who will be playing in the Hague. The top Russian team of Nadezda Makroguzova and Svetlana Kholomina, which qualified to Tokyo via the world rankings, is entered, though. On the men’s side, Oleg Stoyanovskiy/Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Konstantin Semenov/Ilya Leshukov won’t hit the sand, but Nikita Liamin/Taras Myskiv will be there.

Social Media: National season ends in Brazil

Brazil is not part of Europe but it’s always a joy to watch and follow Brazilian beach volleyball. The country’s national season comes to an end this week with the Super Praia, a tournament that will be held at the magnificent location of Urca, just at the feet of the Sugar Loaf and Christ, the Redeemer, two of the most famous postcards of Rio de Janeiro. The venue held the final event of the 2020-2021 Brazilian Tour last weekend and Evandro/Bruno Schmidt and Rebecca/Ana Patricia took the titles.

See you next week!
