Three men’s opening matches to follow

12.08.2021 - Vienna, Austria

If you already miss watching the teams that took Europe to the podium of the men’s tournament of the Tokyo Olympics look no further as they’re ready to hit the sand at the A1 CEV EuroBeachVolley Vienna 2021 presented by Swatch on Thursday.

Following a fantastic first day of action for the women, it’s time the men start competing for continental glory at the Austrian capital and the second day of the event will feature all of the top stars of European and international beach volleyball.

With 32 matches set to happen during the day at both the Red Bull Beach Arena and the A1 5G Side Courts, as many as 33 Olympians, including 23 who recently competed in Tokyo over the last two weeks, will be in action in Vienna.

All matches will be live streamed for both the Austrian and international audiences. If you’re in the host country of the EuroBeachVolley, please come to beachvolleyball.at, where all matches will be streamed during each of the five days of competition.

If you’re anywhere else in the planet, the YouTube channel of the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) is the way to do it, as they will live stream all pool play, Round of 24 and Round of 16 match in the tournament. Form the quarterfinals on, matches will be available at EuroVolleyTV.

It might be hard to know where to look at with so many options available, so here are our suggestions for you to follow on Thursday.

Who? Stoyanovskiy/Krasilnikov (Russia) vs. Nolvak/Tiisaar (Estonia)

When? 9.00 CEST

Where? A1 5G Side Court 3

Why? Fresh from winning their country’s first Olympic medal, a silver in Tokyo, Stoyanovskiy and Krasilnikov have also made it to the final of the 2020 EuroBeachVolley. In great form, the Russians will enter the tournament looking for revenge and with a chip on their shoulders after failing to have success in Vienna in recent years. The Estonians are a team on rise on the World Tour and the EuroBeachVolley is their biggest tournament this year, so expect them to be well-prepared and ready to give the Russians a run for their money.

Who? Mol/Sørum (Norway) vs. Aye/Gauthier-Rat (France)

When? 11.00 CEST

Where? A1 5G Side Court 2

Why? If the Russians are worth watching after taking silver at the Olympics and the 2020 EuroBeachVolley, what about the team that actually won both tournaments? Shortly after reaching the top of their careers, Mol and Sørum are in position to break records and make history again in Vienna and it all starts with a solid opening match performance. The Vikings, though, have an even bigger target on their chests now and Aye and Gauthier-Rat are certainly looking forward to capitalize on it, even more with the EuroBeachVolley being the first official tournament of the Olympic cycle leading to the Paris 2024 Games.

Who? Perusic/Schweiner (Czech Republic) vs. Doppler/Horst (Austria)

When? 12.45 CEST

Where? Red Bull Beach Arena

Why? One of the hottest teams in international beach volleyball right now, Perusic and Schweiner gave a massive display of resilience in Tokyo when they fought back after being forced to forfeit a match due to a positive COVID-19 test. Despite their efforts, they weren’t able to get out of their pools and certainly see the EuroBeachVolley as an opportunity to showcase what they could have done in Tokyo. This will be a special tournament for the home heroes Doppler and Horst, who will split after it, and even though they have at least another match guaranteed later in the day, every opportunity to watch the legendary Austrians together in Vienna should be taken.
