Boermans and de Groot make it to EuroBeachVolley final

15.08.2021 - Vienna, Austria

Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot wanted to make the most of their appearance at the A1 CEV EuroBeachVolley Vienna 2021 presented by Swatch, their first at the continental tournament, and the Dutch have accomplished their mission so far as they made it to the gold medal match in the Austrian capital on Sunday.

The winner of last month’s World Tour event in Gstaad had an eventful match with Polish Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak, which included the 26-year-old Boermans sustaining an injury on his right knee during the second set, but came out on top, with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-10) victory in the semifinals.

“We played three against two today, thank you guys,” Boermans said to the fans after the match. “We had a good game plan and that helped us win the first set even though we were a few points behind for some time. I was a little scared with the injury because it hurt so much, but my partner helped me out, he was amazing with his defense and his attack.”

The last team standing on the way of the Dutch in Vienna is the one of Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway, who qualified to the gold medal match earlier.

“They’re the best team in the world and I’m really looking forward to play them”, de Groot added. “If we can keep playing at this level, I’m sure it will be a good match. We’ll make it a good fight.”

The gold medal match of the 2021 EuroBeachVolley is set to start at 17.45 CEST at the Red Bull Beach Arena. Earlier, at 16.30, Kantor and Losiak will play for bronze against Dutch Aleaxander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen.
