A Golden Farewell for Doppler and Horst

29.08.2021 - Vienna, Austria

Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst’s last international appearance together was at the A1 CEV EuroBeachVolley Vienna 2021 presented by Swatch, earlier this month. Even though the Austrian legends got a very emotional sendoff from their thousands of fans at the Red Bull Beach Arena, their 25th-place finish didn’t make justice to a decade of success and positive results.

That part was covered this weekend, when the 40-year-old Doppler and the 38-year-old Horst shared the courts for one last time and won the Vienna stop of the Austrian Tour, which was played at the Danube Island, in the EuroBeachVolley’s A1 5G Side Courts.

Doppler and Horst were in great form all weekend and couldn’t have been more dominant in their last tournament together, winning all of their five matches in Vienna without dropping sets, including the gold medal match, where they downed Alexander Huber and Christoph Dressler 21-17, 21-19.

“It was fantastic to win our last tournament together and not lose a single set,” Doppler said. “We played better than I expected. We fought a lot, but were able to win important points in the end. I’m very proud that we managed to end out story together at the top.”

“It was a lot of fun to play at the Danube Island again,” Horst added. “We had quite a few fans supporting us and I’m happy that we got to win our last match together. We couldn’t be happier about how it ended.”

Czechs Jakub Sepka and Tomas Semerad finished third after they defeated Jakob Reiter and Michael Murauer in the two-set (21-19, 21-9) bronze medal match.

The women’s title went to Viktoria Fink and Eva Freiberger, who defeated Slovakians Barbora Tokosova and Jana Simanivoca in straight sets (21-18, 21-19). Birgit Schöttl and Anna Mayr took bronze with their 2-0 (21-10, 21-17) victory over Karin Elsner and Jennifer Pfau.
