Bright spots for Italy, victories for Germany

03.08.2022 - Vienna, Austria

The match started with a serve from Italy's Orsi Toth, which had its effect right away. The Italians did not make it easy for the German ladies. In addition, they struggled with some mistakes in the beginning. After Italy took the lead at 4:1, Germany took its first timeout very early. Apparently this was good for them. They immediately turned the tables and took a 4:3 lead. The players played on equal terms: 6:6, 7:7, 8:8, 9:9 ... An alternating chase to catch up could be witnessed before Germany gradually asserted itself further and won the first set for itself with a regular 2-point lead.

In the second set, the Italians could not hold on so well. Germany pulled ahead and left Italy behind for the first time. However, the victory of the Germans was not so secure in the second half, when the Italians fought their way back and after a block by Breidenbach they managed to equalize - 16:16. A ray of hope for the team Breidenbach/Orsi Toth. Towards the end, Italy was able to fend off the first match point of the Germans. However, they still could not prevent the victory. Germany won the first match with 18:21.

The second match was played by Tillmann/Müller for Germany and Bianchin/Scampoli for Italy.

Already the first set was hot: sideout for sideout the match took its course. At 10:11 there was a technical timeout. It remained exciting. Germany kept the lead. On to the second set: Scampoli opened with a strong shot. Germany quickly took the lead here as well, which the ladies were able to extend more and more. The ladies then engaged in a wild rally. The Italians showed a strong phase after the technical timeout and forced the German ladies to take a timeout. Even after the timeout, Tillmann/Müller kept the upper hand in the game and were able to increase their lead to 15:11. The question that arose: Will the Italian ladies keep their nerves in crunch time? They sure did, because it came to a turn in the game: The Italian ladies extend to a score of 19:14 and trumped with a beautiful poke shot, which led to set point. The German attack stuck in the net and so the Italians won the second set 21:15, setting up a third set.

Scrampoli started the third set with a strong diagonal shot and won the first point for Italy. With two strong blocks from Müller, Germany regained the lead to 5:3. However, after a hit into the sideout and a passing error by Müller, this again led to a point deficit on the part of the Germans of 7:6. Strong defense on the part of the German team tied the score at 10:10. In the final phase of the set, the German team showed more conviction and forced the Italians into a timeout at 11:12. After that, a direct attacking error happened, which led to a point lead and finally also to the first match point for the German ladies. After a service by Tillmann into the out and an ace service by Bianchin, the Italian ladies managed to equalize and reached with another ace service their first match point, which succeeded right away and ensured the third set victory.

Borger/Sude from Germany and Scampoli/Bianchin from Italy were sent into the golden set, which started with a nicely contested rally.
