Dutch undisputed winners against Estonians

For the Netherlands Christiaan Varenhorst and Steven Van de Velde, who secured the bronze medal at the last Elite16 in Ostrava, went into the first match. Kaur Kais and Rasmus Meius were the men sent into the match for Estonia. It was quickly clear that the Dutch took the upper hand in this first set, as they jumped ahead to a score of 10-3 within minutes and the Estonians then called for a timeout. But unfortunately the short break did not help the desired turnaround and at a score of 15:6 for the Dutch veterans a technical timeout was called. It seemed as if the Estonians could not really get going, because they could not make up the wide gap and so it came to the set point for the Dutch at 20:9 after about 20 minutes played, which the Dutch men also mastered with bravura and thus secured the victory of the first set.

In fact, the second set saw a turnaround, as the Estonians took the lead and held it until their eighth point. Varenhorst / Van de Velde made up for their deficit and wrestled their way up to a tie at 8-8. The Dutch then turned the tables and took control until the score was 10-8, whereupon the Estonians called a timeout for themselves. After a quick rally and a strong block by Meius, the score was 11:10 for the Dutch. A technical timeout followed. The Dutch continued to skillfully extend their lead and surged ahead to the first match point at 20:16, which was fought off by the Estonians. The second match point, however, was taken and the Dutch won the second set as well. Score: 21:17.

In the second Nations duel, the well-known Dutch veterans Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen met Mart Tiisaar and Dimitriy Korotkov. Again, the experienced Dutchmen took the lead in the first set, but only until the Estonians tied the score at 5:5 and then took the lead. They even managed to take a 3-point lead, which prompted the Dutch to take a timeout. The calculation worked, as the Dutch came back stronger and caught up to tie the game at 10:10, which they managed to do thanks to their strong defensive tactics. The two teams then alternated points until the score was tied at 12:12, after which the Dutch took the lead. Trailing by three points, the Estonians took a timeout at 15:12. However, the short gathering of strength did not succeed as hoped and a short time later the Dutch managed to get their first match point, which helped them win the first set at a score of 21:18.

The second set started evenly with an exciting rally, eventually the Estonians managed to break away and led until the sixth point. After that, a strong block by Meeuwsen caused a turn and the Dutch team tied the match at 8:8. Almost until the very end, the two teams underwent an exciting rally, neither of which could be considered the clear winner of the second set. In the end, the Dutch managed to get the first set point at 20:19 in the second set as well, which fueled the atmosphere in the stadium even more. The Estonians equalized at 20:20 and an ace service from Korotkov even led to a lead and finally to match point at 21:20, which the Dutch managed to fend off. The two teams continued this fight for the match point until finally the Dutch men emerged as the winners with a 2-point lead and a score of 24:22 and won the match.

Thus, the Dutch achieve a 2-0 in the Nations Score.
