Beach Shorts

02.07.2021 - Vienna, Austria

Hello, beach volleyball fans! After one week in which we came out earlier on Wednesday for good reason as we wanted to keep you well-informed on the European Continental Cup Finals, we’re back to our normal Friday slot brining all the information you need heading into the weekend.

Beach volleyball players from around the world are in the last stages of their preparation for the Tokyo Olympics and next week’s World Tour event in Gstaad will play a big role on it, but the day all 48 teams qualified can’t wait for is Monday, July 5, when the drawing of lots will happen.

Before that, some of the top beach volleyball players in Europe will spend the week competing in the continent as the strong Swiss and Dutch National Tours are currently hosting events.

Here’s all of that and more:

Olympic Drawing of Lots in Moscow

Now that we know who the 24 teams in each gender headed to the Olympics are, it’s time to break them down in pools and start the fun. The 24 men’s and women’s teams which earned the right of representing their countries in Tokyo will be split in six pools and there will, of course, be some groups of death waiting to happen in Tokyo. The draw will take place in Moscow, Russia, on Monday, July 5, and we’ll recap it shortly after the last ball is picked, so come back to check if your favorite team was on a lucky day or not.

Swiss Tour continues in Kloten

The Swiss Tour started last weekend in Locarno but this week’s tournament is a strong candidate for best stop of the season due to the high level of visiting teams. On the women’s side, the top home teams of Joana Heidrich/Anouk Vergé-Dépré, which won the season-opening event, and Nina Betschart/Tanja Hüberli will be challenged by Australia’s Mariafe Artacho/Taliqua Clancy and Italy’s Marta Menegatti/Victoria Orsi Toth. Swiss men’s team of Marco Krattiger/Florian Breer, which prevailed in last week’s Continental Cup, will have to handle German stars Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler.

Dutch Tour goes to Utrecht

National competition will also continue in the Netherlands with the second tournament of the Dutch Tour taking place in Utrecht. French Aline Chamereau and Clemence Vieira will challenge the home teams in the women’s tournament. The event will also feature an exhibition match involving the country’s Olympic team of Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen and up-and-comers Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot which will serve as a farewell to the part world champions as they head to the Olympics.

Social Media: Training camps galore

With the Olympics quickly approaching, beach volleyball teams are reuniting for training camps around the world. One of the most interesting of them reunites Norway’s Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, Italy’s Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai and Czechs Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner in the Italian city of Formia. The Beach Volley Vikings were kind enough to let us is for a sneak peek in the YouTube channel.

See you next week!
