The women that topped the charts at the EuroBeachVolley

19.08.2021 - Vienna, Austria

The A1 CEV EuroBeachVolley Vienna 2021 presented by Swatch ended on Sunday in another extremely successful experience reuniting beach volleyball and its passionate Austrian fans in their country’s capital.

Swiss Nina Betschart and Tanja Hüberli emerged victorious on the women’s tournament, taking the trophy back to their country for a second-straight year, following the victory of compatriots Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré in 2020.

Now that we have celebrated the champions and the medalists as they certainly deserved, it’s time to take a look at the top individual performers of the tournament that went down as the best in EuroBeachVolley history.

The victory of the Swiss wouldn’t be possible without Betschart’s solid play all week. The 29-year-old, 1.75m-tall defender led all scorers in the tournament, with 126 points, averaging nine per set. Playing in her first EuroBeachVolley, Dutch silver medalist Katja Stam came right after, with 118.

Latvian Tina Graudina, a 2019 EuroBeachVolley champion, ranked third in points scored with 114. German Julia Sude, who took bronze in Vienna, had 110 and Dutch Raisa Schoon, who paired with Stam to win silver, finished the top five with 106.

Most of Betschart’s points, as you might have imagined, came on offense, as she tallied 115 kills during the tournament. The teams that won silver and bronze in Vienna completed the top five in that skill with Germans Karla Borger and Sude ranking second and fourth, with 95 and 92 respectively, and Schoon and Stam being third and fifth, with 93 and 82 kills registered over the week.

When it came to serving, no one came close to the level of success of German Victoria Bieneck, who registered impressive 22 aces, converting in points nearly 20% of her attempts. Young Spanish Maria Carro had the second-most aces in the event at 13, followed by Czech Martina Williams, a last-minute replacement for Michaela Kubickova, and Dutch Stam and Schoon, with 12 each.

Gold medalist Hüberli was the best blocker of the tournament, registering 30, the same amount of Graudina, but at a slightly superior average of 2.14 per set. Russian Ksenia Dabizha, who competed in a temporary partnership with Olympian Svetlana Kholomina, and Stam had 21 blocks each. Austrian hero Lena Plesiutsching and Sude complete the list with 14 blocks each.
