Hüberli/Brunner kick Swiss colleagues out of quarterfinals

04.08.2023 - Vienna

In the third quarterfinal of the day, the Swiss Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner, runners-up in the 2022 European Championships, face the duo Esmée Böbner and Zoé Vergé-Dépré, also from Switzerland.

The first set starts well for last year's runners-up. They already take the lead right at the start. But also Böbner/Vergé-Dépré show their high level of play. It is a close head-to-head race. The duo Hüberli/Brunner shows impressive skills towards the end of the set, especially Nina Brunner, and secures the first set with 21:17.

But this changes with the start of the second set. This time it is the Swiss Böbner/Vergé-Dépré who are the dominating team. Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner play on a high level, but uncleanly in decisive moments. The Vice European Champions start their chase but the set goes to the team Böbner/Vergé-Dépré with 21:17.

In the third set Hüberli/Brunner seem to have found their form again. But their opponents are not inferior to them. Both teams fight for every point and offer the audience in the Red Bull Beach Arena an exciting quarterfinal. It is a duel at eye level, characterized by numerous rallies. At the decisive moment, however, the runners-up of the 2022 European Championships are able to grab the point and thus secure the last set with 15:12. With two sets won, the Swiss Hüberli/Brunner move into the semifinals.
